Mists of Pandaria to cover Azeroth or what is next WoW expansion.

Hey, gamer readers. Day of gossips today. You know, many popular games and their sequels are surrounded in rumors. They also take a couple of years for development and plot division. That's why trademarks are registered long before release. This week Blizzard, creator of Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo series, registered a trademark under "software" status. What should we expect?

Facebook + Skype = LOVE

Facebook, in a hurry to beat freshly announced Google+  released in-browser video chat for keen users. Seemingly it's done far ahead of schedule because unpolished thingies pop up here and there all the time. Still it's interesting service to try. Working on Skype technology it's stable but early release made stuff quite ugly and lacking UI elements. Check after break for step by step instruction on getting stuff to work.

Music Wednesday: Don't let me be misunderstood.

Introducing young geeks to good music is among missions I set for my community. FB page gets spiced up with some good oldies regularly but that's not enough for NeoYojik. Last week I had to be in hell place with zero Internet; quite brainwashing experience. After couple days I regained ability to think and came up with idea of how to put my music taste into use for your joy. There are dozens songs that became hits more than once, being remade by many artists these engenius melodies kept high level of awesomeness and entertained many generations of audience. If this post gets good feedback, I'm gonna tell about one such song once 1-2 weeks.
Read full story of precious song.

How to make Google Chrome work faster?

Those who use Chrome browser often chose it for speed. It does work faster than competitors but there is way to boost productivity even more. Way to do lies in the very approach to browser architecture. All of them, including current stable version of Chrome (10th to the moment of post creation), use CPU for all calculations. Guys at Google dared to return GPU its original purpose - graphics calculations. Ordinary users can already benefit from this initiative. Read further to know how.

First of all check what version of Chrome is running. To do so click wrench in upper left corner and select "About Google Chrome" in drop down menu. Version should be 9+.

Spreading load between CPU and GPU will need activation of experimental features. To access related control panel type "about:flags" in address bar and hit enter. Among all those fancy (and scary) positions listed we're interested in two:
  1. GPU Accelerated Composing,
  2. GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D.
Enable them both. Or, at least, first one to significantly increase performance on multimedia pages, HTML5. Then scroll down and click "Restart Now" to apply changes. Try some high load page to give your refurbished browser a test.
Watch this video tutorial, will take under a minute of your precious time. Very important step for those feeling insecure with computers. Relax, do this little tinkering and make your life on the net easier.

KEEP IN MIND:
  • these features are yet experimental and might fail. They didn't in my testing perion though;
  • most performance boost will be seen for video streaming (like YouTube) and HTML5 applications;
  • Having those running in background while playing 3d game may SLOW your PC so turn those off or shut browser down while serious gaming.
P.S.: You can download Chrome browser from Google. For now it's best options for personal usage.
P.P.S: Please leave feedback, it's very important for me.

HP day

It's always interesting to watch how huge giants, used to playing on b2b markets, learn to make good consumer products. Step by step they make way from functional brick to fancy item. For example HP, following its "Computer is Personal again" campaign, is pushing to portable electronics market and makes PCs more and more suer friendly.

Google Art project: why my granny asked to teach her computer.

Google made many interesting projects. I just loved some of them, like blogger (R.I.P. Waves) but nothing can compare to this one. Google Art Project actually moved an 80 year old lady. She will be learning to use computer. Now that's an achievement.
Service is based on Street View technology and lets users wander around some most famous art museums of the world. Add super zoom on top of that and your perfect free excursion is delivered.

Art Project has simple and clean interface. Paintings take most of the screen and are surrounded by menus:

  • museum variety in top left corner
  • particular piece of art selection beside it to the right
  • account settings and instructions on top right
  • information menu is called with "i" button next to visitor's guide
  • collection creation pane on bottom

I gathered my favorite paintings from Moscow Tretyakov Art Gallery for you. Please, take your time and watch this collection. Even if you don't like fine arts. Reading descriptions is optional but recommended.
