We have waited for 2 years, imagined how it would be, most talented of us drew countless concepts and FINALLY on 27th January 2011 Sony unveiled the real thing. Going under codename "next-generation portable" or NGP, it has pimped out specs, highly improved design and nothing in common with our expectations. Thing will move around 5 concepts: Revolutionary User Interface, Social Connectivity, Location-based Entertainment, Converging Real and Virtual (augmented) Reality. Updates made.

First a bit of history: that's how PSP fans expected upcoming device to be. I collected most spread designs on Internet. Main new feature concept artists expected was touch screen. Just two years ago noone would even imagine 3g connectivity or augmented reality. Quite a shocker is that very expected device's form-factor stay same. It's so comfy, why would Sony change it?
Traditionally Sony makes high quality and high class products. Very durable also, that's why none of popular slider designs could ever be used for gadget with 3+ years usage life. Devising design, they obviously considered long life time for PSP2. It has top possible specs for year 2011:
- 4 cores Arm Cortex A9 CPU
- High productivity GPU with analogue video codecs (SGX543MP4+)
- 5 inch OLED display, capacitive, read finger friendly, touch screen with incredible 960x544 resolution (4 times bigger than current)
- built in stereo speakers and microphone
- front and rear facing cameras
- BACK multitouch touchpad, as huge as main screen
- three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer (so it knew exactly in which position you hold it) and three-axis built-in compas (so it knew where North is even if you flip it 45 degrees)
- built-in GPS, YES!!!
- WiFi connectivity (expected one)
- 3g cellular connectivity (dreams come true?)
- Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
This is how it will look. Front and back.
Games will come on "new media," not UMD anymore, it's yet unclear what sort of flash memory is to be used. Sony's rather proud of the fact it's offering the world's first dual analog stick combo on a portable device. The new console's user interface is called LiveArea, made of several vertically navigable home screens and built-in social networking through PlayStation Network.
You can jump between games and the LiveArea without losing your progress and comment on your buddies' great feats of mobile gaming. Sure, PSP2 will have full internet support, including browsing and Skype, as current one. Front facing camera and built-in microphone make it so much more tempting to try!
Last but not least - official introduction video. Isn't this gadget beautiful? When Nintendo shown 3DS, I thought I'm gonna buy it for sure. Now I tend towards PSP2, thought it will be much more expensive. As everything by Sony.
UPDATE: device will NOT cost 600 bucks as it's rumored around the net. Will, most likely be around 300 american dollars for USA and Asian markets and 280-310 euros elsewhere. Sony expects to push more affordable WiFi-only version and add 3g as something premium. Not yet clear if presence of 3g will be in separate "elite" lineup or via some optional/removable accessory. Also unclear if 3g is the only element treated specially.
